Hackey Sack.

A hacky sack (hack) is a very culturally-identifiable object, used in a game focused around kicking the hack in order to keep it from touching the ground. There are many different variations in the design of a hack that can change its physical appearance, but all of these assorted shapes, sizes, colors, and stuffings do nothing to alter the meaning that it signifies. Though no signified meaning is universal, there is a very dominant meaning in the United States for the signifiers of a hacky sack.

In most of the U.S., the common perception of a hacky sack is well-established: hippy, stoner, slacker, perhaps an environmentalist or activist of some sort. But beyond stereotypes for the people that hacky sack represents is an air of relaxation, of care-free youth. There are no real rules in a game of hack; when a group of friends plays, there is always accompanying conversation. Hacky sack is a simple, enjoyable, and social activity, which is all signified by its image or verbalization. Even if one doesn't find pleasure in a game of hack, few can argue against the concept signifying youthful lightheartedness.

P.s. - sorry this was so late. I completely forgot about it until we talked about it in class today.
