Signs/Signifiers/Signified-- Wedding Rings

This weekend I attended my cousin’s wedding. Little did I know it would spark an idea for my cultural studies class blog! The exchange of vows and rings during a wedding is the quintessential part of the wedding, as it consecrates the marriage when the couple says “I do.” As the minister stated, the rings are signs of the couples' “love and fidelity” to each other. A wedding ring is an interesting sign because it signifies different meanings, depending on the audience. The sign of a wedding ring is easily recognized by the rest of society. The ring itself is a sign, as it is what we see. The signifier is the where the ring is placed, on the 3rd finger of the left hand. Due to conventions of our culture, this allows for the meaning of this signifier to be understood. A ring on the third finger of the left hand signifies that the person is married and is “unavailable.” It is even more interesting to look at the idea of an engagement ring, as that sign carries more connotations about status— including the status of power in the relationship and economic status. First, the engagement ring is worn only by the female, after being placed on her hand by the male. This signifies the idea of the male being the dominant party in the relationship and the woman is the man’s “property.” Engagement rings also have come to be signs for economic status. Again, the ring is the sign. The size of the ring becomes the signifier, and the signified is the economic status of the woman’s fiancé. Wedding bands and engagement rings are some of the most easily recognizable signs found in our western American culture as everyone who is a part of the culture recognizes the meaning (or shall I say meanings) they convey.

  1. I thought you did a great job explaining what the signifier was. The ring itself is a sign but I liked how you mentioned that there are more than one signifiers - the 3rd finger placement, and the size of the ring. I thought this was a great point because the ring sign can be read in two different ways. Another idea I thought was great is how our culture is so used to showing male dominance and that the engagement ring is another form which shows that our culture is surrounded by that type of perspective.

  2. I thought you did a great job of explaining the wedding rings for this blog post!
I never really thought about how only women wear the engagement ring, and men do not. I found that to be a good point.
I also think that the size of the ring totally shapes the economic status, I have a friend who works with me at a restaurant and she made a comment about how she doesn't like to wear her wedding ring while she is working because she is afraid people will see it and not tip her as much because they speculate that she already has enough money. I think the size of the ring along with the color of the diamond (and if there is one at all) definitely changes how other people in our culture view you. If you have a huge yellow tinted flashy ring on your finger as your engagement ring, people might think 'oh she's only marrying him for the money,' but if its a small subtle diamond they may think 'I bet thats all her fiance could afford' and etc. I find this to be sad though, I am one who believes in marriage and I feel that it is sad that the wedding ring is reduced to that, when it is meant to mean so much more.

  3. Wow this post really opened my eyes to the significance of a wedding ring. Symbolically, the round shape of a ring is a signifier. The signified is Marriage being "everlasting and eternal". After researching a bit further, it seems there is some historical significance to the ring finger as well. The ring finger still signifies the "vein of love" to ancient scientists. And also the holy trinity to Christians. (http://www.newsletter.kaijewels.com/ring-finger-meaning-kj-01.htm) It is also interesting to point out that until the last century, diamonds were not traditionally associated with rings until a diamond seller used a signifier in his commercial depicting a proposal with a diamond ring. This message was the signified, stating that if you want to propose, do it with a diamond ring. Since then, we have associated marriage with diamonds. =

  4. I agree with thee other posts, i think you did a great job at explaining the significance of a wedding ring. Its a small piece of a wedding that has a huge meaning and significance to it. Usally when i attend weddings i dont think about the ring and what it means, i just see the ring as something beautiful, but this has opened my eyes to make me understand that a wedding ring really does have a lot of significance behind it that many may over see like i use to. Great post!
