"Read My Lipstick, Vote for Sarah"

We all remember back from the 2008 presidential election when Sarah Palin started referring to herself as a "pitbull" to represent a sense of toughness and relentlessness; This photo I posted is one of many examples we can take away from that rather interesting campaign strategy. Although many of us feel that this was completely obnoxious, it definitely displays culture on multiple accounts. This photo is actually an advertisement which is obviously targeting those who are more "right winged" conservatives, and its message is obviously to vote for Sarah Palin. The way in which HOW this was delivered is interesting; They use the old (somewhat cliche) command "read my lips" and put a spin on it, changing "lips" to "lipstick" because Palin was known for her crimson red lipstick. All of a sudden a pittbull commanding "read my lips" becomes a lot more feminine when its in full makeup commanding "read my lipstick." And that's one of the messages Palin wanted to send to voters; That just because she is female does not mean she couldn't be an agressive political candidate. Another theme I took from this photo was that the man wearing this shirt in the ad was black; At the time, Palin and McCain were obviously running against Obama, and I believe that they were trying to show us that the republican party is a lot more "diversity supporting" than how they're perceived. This T-shirt shows us how politically and culturally charged the seemingly "small" objects can be.
