"Guys, I'm Sotally Tober"

Men and Women Drinking Alcohol:
It's strange to think that we live in a society in which we are judged by how much/what kind of alcohol we consume. If I were to walk into a bar and order an appletini I would most likely be labeled as "gay" within a matter of seconds. This applies to women as well; Society has constructed a particular "bar scene" or "party scene" where guys are supposed to drink beer, and women are supposed to drink fruity cocktails. This, along with the way we dress, the way we look physically, and the way we behave is an example of how personal style or preference clashes with what CULTURE prefers. T.V., internet, and print media teach us these patterns at an early age; children absorb these generalized standards into their personal conceptions of what is "correct" behavior for their gender, then utilize these concepts to develop a self-image that satisfies themselves. Eventually, we all learn that gender is a function of body practices and roles, rather than a function of anatomy. So, when we choose what we drink, its more of a choice of how we are going to contribute to our socially constructed self-image rather than what we actually desire. Culture clearly possesses agency (power) in this issue, and many other issues that  involve how we are seen in the eyes of others.

Example
Beer commercials: Most beer commercials feature men as the beer drinkers and may include sexy women who are either bartenders, girlfriends, or wives, but never the beer drinkers.

  1. I like and agree with your argument about gender norms and the types of alcohol we drink. I think this could be taken one step further to talk about gender roles and how intoxicated each gets and what is acceptable. I think it is seen as more acceptable for a guy to be heavily intoxicated than a girl. I think girls are judged by a different standard than men.

  2. Guys and girls are definitely judged by a different standard. For guys, it seems like it is always a competition on who can drink more. I think that it is much more acceptable for a dude to be way too drunk than a girl. I think that most people see it as not that big of a deal if a guy is passed out drunk. For a girl, however it is a different story.

  3. Hey, I love appletini's. And every time I order one, I make some lame joke about 'girly drinks.' Talk about docile bodies....
