Of course, hygiene is part of everyone's daily body practices. Whether it be brushing your teeth, combing your hair or taking a shower, just about everyone participates in cleaning themselves in one way or another. These activities have a lot to do with one's self image. In general, people that are clean and have good hygiene are more respected than those who don't. It can also say alot about one's place in society. For example, rich people tend to be well-kept, while homeless people are often quite dirty and maybe have not taken a shower in weeks. Therefore, people will sometimes spend a lot of time working on this. I also think that people just feel better about themselves when they are clean rather than all sweaty or dirty. That is definitely the case for me.
I also think that this is a situation of 'pursuit without terminus' as well. For one to have good hygiene, they must keep it up for a long period of time. For example, they need to take a shower, and brush their teeth everyday. If they stop for a couple days, they will very quickly become dirty and lose some of the respect they would get if they looked clean and well-kept. Hygiene is probably the most important aspect of image to other members of society. It can either give you a lot of respect or make people look at you in disgust.
i think i would definitely have to agree that hygiene is probably the most important piece of an image in society's eyes. Without good hygiene, someone can be immediately cast down now questions asked. Its also definitely interesting to think about why i really wake up in the morning and clean myself. I can argue all day that its for myself, but is it really? I like how you related this to the 'pursuit without terminus' situation as well. When i was thinking about what body practice to write my blog on, personal hygiene didn't even cross my mind. I guess it just goes to show that every aspect of our daily lives and our actions is a consequence of culture.
